I recommend Muhammad Asad’s translation of the Qur’an. It has commentaries linked to the context of the revelations.

I went to bed really early last night, sick to my stomach. Just woke up a few minutes ago to news of hundreds of massacred Syrians, including children being stabbed and women being raped.
